Getreu dem Buch von Waldemar Bonsels, das heuer 100 Jahre alt wird, erzählt der Naturfilmer Wolfgang Jungshans die Abenteuer der Biene Maja mit lebenden Insekten nach. Zwei Jahre dauerten die Dreharbeiten und 50.000m Film sollen verbraucht worden sein, um die spannendsten Episoden des Buches ins Kino zu bringen: Geburt und erster Ausflug der Biene Maja, ihre Gefangenschaft und Rettung aus dem Netz der Kreuzspinne Thekla, und schließlich die große Schlacht zwischen Bienen und Hornissen. Kein gewöhnlicher Naturfilm, sondern ein im Filmsinne spannendes Kinoabenteuer, das schon 1926 mit besten Kritiken ausgezeichnet wurde.

Die neue Filmmusik von Florian C. Reithner, eingespielt vom Ensemble Filmharmonie, macht den Film wieder zu einem echten Erlebnis. Der „kleinste Monumentalfilm der Filmgeschichte“ - schon demnächst auf DVD!

This is the bee’s knees - this is the smallest epic of the motion picture history which will leave you buzzing with excitement!

The most famous bee of the world celebrates its centenary in 2012. In 1924 the Berlin Kulturfilm company decided to adapt the famous children’s book by Waldemar Bonsels into a feature film - starring live insects! The film took two years in the making, with 164.000 ft of raw footage shot of which only 7.400 ft made it into the final film. But the film was worth the effort: for the first time, a feature film story is told only by insects, depicting the microcosm of bee hives and their environs in every detail, and narrated with good humour. The film has its poetic and its dramatic moments (the dung beetle Kurt rescues Maya from the cobweb of the evil garden spider Thekla) and a stunning battle scene (hornets vs. bees) with a cast of thousands. The stunning soundtrack by Florian C. Reithner makes it all the more impresive.
